The story

This recipe has been a family favorite since Collin was little. We love using fresh apples from the family orchard and making a big batch every Fall. Don’t forget a big scoop of vanilla bean ice cream and a caramel drizzle on top!

The recipe

13 steps to a pan of apple pie

  1. Heat the oven

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees

  2. Line the pan

In 9x13 pan, line with pie crusts cutting to fit bottom & sides of pan

  3. Crimp the crust

Crimp edges, set aside while preparing filling

  4. Mix the spices

In large bowl, combine 2/3 cup sugar, cornstarch and spices

  5. Toss the apples

Add apples and vanilla then toss together. Let sit while preparing crumble

  6. Start the crumble

In large bowl, mix together 1/2 cup sugar, brown sugar, salt and flour

  7. Finish the crumble

Pour melted butter & stir until crumble starts to form

  8. Fill the crust

Spoon apple mixture into prepared 9x13 pan w unbaked crust

  9. Thicken the juices

With the remaining liquid, microwave for a couple seconds at a time until it thickens

  10. Pour them over

    Pour over apples

  11. Top with crumble

    Sprinkle crumble over top

  12. Bake until golden

Bake 45-44 mins until the top is golden brown

  13. Let it rest

Let sit for 15 mins until cutting

Cook's tips

  • In place of all the separate spices, you can use 2 1/2 tsp apple pie spice
  • This tastes great with store bought crust but homemade takes it to the next level
  • Be careful when heating the liquid at the bottom of the apples, this burns quickly!
